Book Review - The Bucolic Plague: How Two Manhattanites Became Gentleman Farmers

So I finished reading last week The Bucolic Plague: How Two Manhattanites Became Gentlemen Farmers: An Unconventional Memoir by Josh Kilmer-Purcell and I have to say I did really enjoy this book.  I do have to disclose that I am a big fan of his show Fabulous Beekman Boys so I may be a bit bias on my book review.   I just enjoyed the back story of how they came to find the Beekman and what they had originally wanted from the Beekman.  I liked learning more about the characters of Sharon Springs NY.  I loved this descriptions of the animals and his relationships with them.  I love his love hate relationship with Martha Stewart because don't we all have a love/hate relationship with her?  I loved the stories of the zombie flies that never die in the mansion.  I love how patient Farmer John is with the two of them.  I loved how he did not paint a picture of a magical life on a farm.  It was really hard for them and they continue to struggle. Towards the end of the book I truly believed Josh and Brent were going to break up but I have seen their show and the new season has just started on Planet Green so I assured myself that even though the book left me with a feeling of "the end', I knew their story continues on in television land!

Book Review - Sarah's Key

I finally, after almost two years of my cousin Kerry begging me to, read Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay.  And I have to say I loved the story.  It is a fictionalize story of true events that happened in Paris during the summer of 1942.  Thousands of Jewish families were arrested and sent to the Ve'lodrome d'Hiver just outside the city limits  and then transported to Germany.  The story focuses on Sarah Starzynski and her family.  The story is neat as it is told in the present day through Julia Jarmond, a American reporter living in France who is assigned to do an article on the 60 year anniversary of the Ve'lodrome d'Hiver.  Through her investigation, she discovers Sarah's story and how it is interlaced with her life now.  The subject matter was dark but the author left me wanting more.  Thanks Kerry for such a wonder read!

Valentine's Day in March

So I am making dinner with my hubby tonight when he looks at me and says
"Hey, isn't Valentines day coming up?"
I look at him lost.
He says "What?  I was thinking we can do something special"
I continue to look at him lost
He then says "Oh yeah it is March.  Did we do anything for Valentine's day?  Did I get you anything?'
I could really have taken advantage of his brain fart but I told him yes we went for sushi and you bought me a second GPS.

Life with him is never dull!!

Book Review - "I'm Not Myself These Days : Memoir"

I just finished reading I Am Not Myself These Days: A Memoir (P.S.) by Josh Kilmer-Purcell and I have to say I could not put this book down!!  The book is about Josh's first year in NY,  his life as a drag queen, and a stormy relationship with Jack, his crackhead prostitute boyfriend.  I really enjoyed the way Josh narrated the book.   I felt like he was sitting across a table from me, re-telling this story.  Some parts of the book were dark and sad but other were laugh out loud funny!  I love how he chronicled changing over from Josh to Aqua, his drag queen persona.  The book is somewhat raunchy and very detailed so it is not a book for the weak at heart!
